Ashten's Journey

7/14/22: Ashten Henery is born (5 weeks early)

8/31/22: Ashten is taken to the hospital and admitted for parainfluenza. He is discharged 3 days later.

Friday: 9/9/22

Ashten came home from daycare and wasn't acting like himself. He was very pale wouldn't take a bottle, and was extremely lethargic. We placed the Owlete on his foot to track his Oxygen levels and heart rate. His O2 dropped from 100 to 73 (which is not good). The ambulance was called and he was taken to Children's Hospital. Ashten had a rough night. His heart couldn't keep up with his little body and the nurse had to revive him a few times. They decided to intubate him and allow the breathing tubes to breathe for him.

This was Ashten at home right before we took him in.

Saturday: 9/10/22

Ashten still has breathing tubes that continue to breathe for him. His heart rate keeps dropping below normal levels. It happens at random times (when he is awake/when he is asleep). We are working with a respiratory therapist on trying to figure out this issue.

Sunday: 9/11/22

Today Ashten decided to be SUPER BABY! Our amazing nurses have helped put his consume on so we can conquer the world... and this virus! Today is all about fighting those pesky germs!

Monday: 9/12/22

Ashten is still being intubated and having all of the breathing done for him. He is on antibiotics to help fight the virus. His heart rate keeps going up and down at random times. We are still working with the respiratory team.

Tuesday: 9/13/22

Today Ashten's sister decided to join him in the ER. Her story is below. Ashten slept a lot and is continuing to fight. His x-rays show that he still has a lot of fluid and crud in his left lung. They are unsure if this will turn into bronchitis or phenomena.

Wednesday: 9/14/22

Ashten's Carbon Dioxide levels are continuing to increase which is not what we want. Our doctors are continuing to work to figure out what medications work best for Ashten's body. The nurses are able to adjust his tube to ensure that Ashten's CO2 levels are at a safe level even though they are high. Today we are starting to ween off of the sedation! Yay

Thursday: 9/15/22

TODAY IS CHIEFS DAY! Ashten not only LOVES the KC Chiefs but LOVES when the nurses use the neonatal vibration machine on his back and chest. This helps to break up the gunk! We are hoping to be extubated soon :-)

Friday: 9/16/22

GUESS WHAT - Ashten's ventilator came out!!! Ashten has been waiting to use his lungs for many days now. Although his cries are quiet and somewhat hard to hear we are happy to hear his little voice again! We are not out of the woods quite yet as Ashten has to prove that he can breathe and be stable on his own!

Saturday: 9/17/22

GO BIG RED

Today Ashten is not only HUNGRY for a win but he is HUNGRY for some real food. While he isn't quite ready for a bottle he was able to take a paci that was dipped in milk and did really well with that! He will continue to utilize his feeding tube for the time being!

Well... The Huskers were disappointing...

What's not disappointing is Ashten was moved out of the PICU!!!!! We still have many steps to take before we are all healed up but this was a huge step for us!

Sunday: 9/18/22

Last night Ashten had a hard time keeping anything down. We were a little worried about him staying hydrated, BUT the amazing staff at Children's are taking good care of him. Today is all about mommy snuggles!

Bathtime & TLC

4PM: Sweet Ashten received a much needed bath & is comfortably sleeping!

Monday: 9/19/22

Today we have started to see Ashten’s personality come back. From the eye rolls when he is annoyed with his sister to the smiles when he is cuddling with Matt and I we are seeing our baby’s sweet demeanor return. We still have some way to go, BUT the cuddles sure make Ashten’s mommy happy!

Tuesday: 9/20/22

Ashten had a great night and is doing well with bottle feeds. The doctors took him off the monitors which is exciting and scary at the same time! We got a little smile from Ash during cuddle time!

Wednesday: 9/21/22

Ashten is coming home!!!! We are so so excited (and a little nervous) to be bringing Ash home! He will be hanging out with mom/dad at home for the next few weeks to let his lungs completely heal! He doesn't know how he feels about sharing the house with Addi :-)

Thursday: 9/22/22

Ashten loved spending time with us during the day SO MUCH that he kept us up all night ;-) It feels so good to have us 4 back together in one house again! Wrigley is keeping Ashten company and warm

Friday: 9/23/22

Ashten & Addi liked going to the park and enjoyed the great weather. Mom and Dad LOVED watching Addi smile and laugh as she played on the swings, teeter-totter, and slides. Ashten enjoyed looking around and taking in the sun's rays

Saturday: 9/24/22

Ashten decided to wear his flash onesie in hopes to continue to have a "speedy" recovery! Addi found her dad's Groot figure and decided that this is her new favorite toy.

Monday: 9/26/22

Ashten was visited by his cousin & loved spending time out in the sun. He continues to get stronger each day!

Tuesday: 9/27/22

Ashten has been working on stealing his mama's heart (which he has already done) as he is perfecting his adorable smile!

Wednesday: 9/28/22

Fresh air & Fresh turkey legs can really do wonders to one's soul! Today we visited Vala's Pumpkin Patch as a family and enjoyed having the patch practically to ourselves.
